What I feel is something physical, inexplicable. I feel a connection and at the same time a detachment, a closeness and at the same time a distance. While there, she feels an immediate connection with the Italian language, which seems foreign yet also strangely familiar – a paradox of sorts, a simultaneous closeness and remoteness. This love affair begins in December 1994 when Lahiri takes a short trip to Florence in the company of her sister. ![]()
